| Personal Resource: Self-Esteem Self-esteem describes the way people think and feel about themselves. People who think generally positive thoughts about themselves are said to have high self-esteem. High self-esteem is a relationship resource because people who value themselves are likely to believe that they are worthy of having healthy relationships and therefore work to make sure that their relationships honor their senses of self-worth. Strategies for increasing your self-esteem 1. Surround yourself with people who treat you well and help you to feel good about yourself. 2. Do more of the things you’re good at. For example, if you are a strong tennis player and enjoying playing, try to play often. 3. Be gentle on yourself with those things at which you’re not as good. Remember, nobody’s perfect! 4. Give to others. Seek out opportunities to volunteer for a cause you believe in. 5. When you are feeling your best, write a letter to yourself that you can read when you’re feeling down to remind you of your self-worth. |
