| Personal Resource: Self-Awareness A person with self-awareness has a high level of knowledge about his or her strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, and motivations for acting in certain ways. This self-awareness serves as a relationship resource when that person uses it to achieve a greater understanding of his or her relationship. Also, self-awareness can support relationships by helping a person to be attentive to his or her role in relationship patterns. Strategies for increasing your Self-Awareness 1. Keep a journal, and review it often to identify patterns in your life and areas for further growth. 2. Ask the people in your life for feedback about how they perceive you. Try to listen without becoming defensive. 3. Seek out counseling as a way to learn more about yourself. 4. Learn to view challenging experiences as opportunities to learn about yourself. Ask yourself: What does my response to this challenge tell me about myself? 5. Be honest with yourself about your personal weaknesses and how they might influence your relationship with your partner. |
